May Update

What a pleasant change this lovely weather makes to our general demeanour and to the playing condition of the golf course! I wish it made the same difference to the quality of my golf…for some reason I can't get the ball to stop now…anyone got any ideas?

The green-keeping team have now been able to get out and really get going on the drainage work that so desperately needs to be done to improve our course, and the new pins, flags and cups make a rare difference to the look of the course too. The greens have been a bit tricky of late. This is partly because of a sudden spurt in growth, and partly because the greens mower wasn't behaving itself. The unusual thing recently is that the greens actually have to be watered!

The greens, the drainage, and things like the creation of new grass tees are all part of the long term plan to improve and upgrade our course. Admittedly, there may be some irritations along the way for us, but we'd appreciate it if members can bear in mind that the long-term goal is for the benefit of the club as a whole.

There are a number of jobs, both inside and outside, needing to be done which the green-keepers may not have time to do, so if you have a little spare time, please go along to the club and speak to Gus. I've noticed a distinct improvement in the amount of litter on the course this month. Thanks to everyone for doing their bit.

Plans for the Centenary Dinner are moving along nicely. See the advert in this issue of An Carrannach for details. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity…don't be slow or you could miss it.

Now, the golf winners for the last month are as follows:

Gents:
May medal - Gerry Arscott
Green-keeper's Trophy - Roddy (Jockan) MacDonald
Wednesday League - Murdo (Stag) MacKenzie
Thompson Trophy - Bill Roberts

Ladies:
Shieldaig Trophy - Karen Starr
May medal - Keira McFleat
Ladies Stableford League - Keira McFleat

The gents match with Strathpeffer Spa was postponed.

A good contingent of Lochcarron gents went to Gairloch for their Open, and had a good day. Robin Arnott and Callum Morrison both came third in their handicap sections, and Bill Roberts won the nearest the pin. Well done guys!

Keira and Karen played at the Gairloch Ladies Open, and although they had a great time, they didn't trouble the scorers! Better luck next time ladies!

Bart and Roddy Hope also enjoyed their rounds at the Strathpeffer Gents Walk On Open.

Please note that the clubhouse is open throughout June for green fees and club hire etc, with the Tee Room serving refreshments and meals Monday and Tuesday 10am to 6pm, and Wednesday to Friday 10am to 8pm. On Sundays, the Tee Room is open mid-day to 8pm, serving roast lunches between 1pm and 4pm - bookings preferred for roast lunches please (call Gus on 07516 554336). The Tee Room is closed on Saturdays.

As always, new members and visitors are very welcome! An honesty box system for green fees runs when the clubhouse is closed. Do sign the new visitors book and give your comments. For more information about the club please browse our website.
