June 05 Monthly Report
The competition season is once again with us. Unfortunately due to the inclement weather in April it was necessary to postpone two fixtures, the men's Pairs Championship and the ladies match against Isle of Skye. However all the remaining competitions have been held with a good number of participants taking part.
The season opened with a mixed competition for any member with a handicap and as usual ended up with friendly rivalry between the men, ladies and juniors. This year we congratulate our promising junior, Kieran Murray, in winning. In the medals fixtures; for April Tony Woodward won for the men with Mary Henery being successful for the ladies, whilst in May Gerry Howkins won for the men with Karen Starr winning for the ladies. In the trophy competitions we must congratulate Finlay Matheson (milk) on a super start this year, winning both the Graham Trophy (strokeplay) and Greenkeeper's (stableford) trophies. In the competitions against other clubs we have experienced mixed fortunes with results reflecting home advantage. We lost at Strathpeffer (1 - 4) and at Skeabost (3 - 9) but won at home against Fort Augustus (3 - 2). Our thanks are extended to Dan Marshall, our men's captain, in organising these inter-club competitions and making them such a great day out.
Now the weather has started to improve work has commenced in earnest on course improvements, initially concentrating on drainage. This work is essential as we continue our policy of continuous improvement to our course and facilities, helping us to attract more members and visitors. Whilst the drainage work is being undertaken we apologise to players for the large sections of 'Ground Under Repair' but seeding has now started and we anticipate significant improvement over the next few weeks.
Membership levels have not yet reached those of last year, but after a slow start have recently improved. We would like to encourage those who have not as yet re-joined to please do so and anyone wishing to take up golf, to join by simply seeing Gus Murray in the clubhouse or contacting our Membership Secretary, Fiona Matheson (milk), all are welcome. Remember membership fees can equate to less than 2 weeks green fee payments so membership really does represent good value for money.
We continue to encourage juniors to take up the sport and support Plockton High School in their golf-training programme as well as undertaking basic, introductory, coaching for Lochcarron Primary School pupils. We would like more junior members and recent indications are that by encouraging more junior interest in golf we will be able to attract membership. Parents should be aware that annual junior membership costs little more than a 'top-up' mobile 'phone card!!
We welcome ladies only to a weekly fun evening on Thursdays, teeing off at 6.15pm, anyone can come along and try golf or can contact Karen Starr, our lady captain, for more information.
We would like to remind the more serious golfers, with recognised golf handicaps, of our annual 'Open Competition' to be held this year on 9th July. There are handicap sections for men and ladies with voucher prizes in all sections as well as a top prize for the best scratch score. To reserve a tee time simply contact Gus Murray in the clubhouse or 'phone him on 0774 954 9361. Spectators are welcome with excellent food and bar available all day in the clubhouse.
Weather will always be a vital ingredient of a successful golf club and we believe that if this fine spell continues we should have a cracking season again here in Lochcarron with more members and visitors enjoying the sport.
