June/July Update

It's been a busy and successful couple of months at LGC. The weather, on the whole, has been benign, allowing a huge amount of course improvement work to be carried on by the expanded greens team of Finlay Matheson, Tom Watson, and Gus Murray. They all put in a power of work, along with some much-appreciated willing helpers, to prepare the course in excellent condition for the Lochcarron Open, which was played on 14th July. More of that later…

The June results in competitions were as follows: In the men's section, Murdo (Stag) MacKenzie took the June medal and Gus Murray the Wednesday league event, while an away match at Gairloch resulted in a resounding victory for the Gairloch men. In the club championship, Murdo Stag was pipped at the post after leading at the 54 hole mark, by Simon (Hope) MacKenzie. The home team recorded a win against Skeabost, and the July medal was taken by Roddy MacLennan. The one club and a putter competition was won by Gus Murray.

In the ladies' section, the June medal was taken by Karen Starr, and the ladies' home fixture against Gairloch was also a home win…although admittedly with the help of one of the Gairloch team, who drew the short straw and played for Lochcarron to balance out the numbers! (Thanks Pauline!!!!). In July, Keira McFleat took her first medal of the year. Away competitions were also successful for the Lochcarron ladies, as Keira took the bronze first prize at the Grantown-On-Spey Ladies Open, and Karen took second silver at the same competition.

Our main event of the year, the Lochcarron Open, was a resounding success in all departments. The course was in superb condition with the greens being the best I have seen at Lochcarron. The competition was fully booked with eager competitors from as far afield as the Isle of Anglesey. Even the slightly damp weather did not drown anyone's spirits, as all agreed they had enjoyed their golf. The post-competition entertainment was superb (thanks to Murdo, Kennack, and Sandy - plus various "irregular" vocalists), as was the catering (many thanks to Christine, Baba, and Cis). To the committee members and club members who helped both on and before the day…well done and thank you. Raffle and sponsorship support this year was excellent, and much appreciated also - thanks to the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Lochcarron Food Centre, The Tee Room, R & C MacLennan Butchers, Shieldaig Export, Alastair Thomson Golf Shop, and many private contributors.

The section winners of the Open were as follows: First scratch with a fine gross of 66 was George Rollo of Gairloch. First handicap (scratch to 12) was John (Slippy) Finlayson of Isle of Skye GC. First in the 13-18 division was Berwyn Jones of Bull Bay GC, and Bart McFleat of Lochcarron took first in the 19-28 division. Kenny Murray took the Best Lochcarrron Man (Claymore) trophy. The ladies section was won by Karen Starr, who also took the Best Lochcarron Lady (Isy Dua) trophy.

All looks set for a hotly contested and enjoyable second half of the season. As always, visitors and new members are welcome.
